Gallstone risk factors
Age (older gives more time to develop)
Female
Increased cholesterol or pigment (from obesity - cholesterol, or bile infection - pigment etc)
Presentation of gallstones
Can be asymptomatic Dyspeptic symptoms (flatulent dyspepsia) Biliary colic Acute cholecystitis – right upper quadrant pain (somatic rather than visceral pain) Empyema Perforation Jaundice (Mirrizi’s Syn.) – painful (unlike other malignant jaundice) Gallstone Ileus

Jaundice
As a result of high bilirubin levels
Bilirubin
A pigment formed in the liver by the breakdown of haemoglobin and excreted in bile
Cholecystectomy
Surgical removal of the gallbladder
Choledocholithiasis
Presence of gall stones in the common bile duct (incidental finding at cholecystectomy)
Signs of choledocholithiasis
Post cholecstectomy pain
Obstructive jaundice
Acute pancreatitis
Ascending cholangitis
Cholangitis
Inflammation of the bile duct
