- 1513 battle of spurs victory left Henry with propaganda success but very little was actually gained

- James IV killed but Henry does not take advantage of James V the new child ruler of Scotland

- henry launches ill conceived invasion of France in 1544
- confined his attacks near Calais but gains little of importance
- France counter attack with attack on isle of wight and scottish border
- peace made in 1546
- little gained and henry forced to sell crown lands and debase coins to fund
Scotland 1540-47
- Battle of Solway moss 1542, James V died leaving week old MQS in charge
- henry doesn’t capitalise as he is too focused on Scotland
- Treaty of Grenwich 1553, betrothed Mary to Prince Edward
Ireland
- England ruled over ‘The Pale’ with the help of the Earl of Kildare
- Henry dismisses Kildare but struggles to govern without him
- massive financial drain
- religious division within Ireland
