Targets were very ambitious. ​

Focused on the development of heavy industry. ​

Focus on coal . Iron, steel, oil and machinery. ​

More attention to consumer goods.​

Aims: continue the development of heavy industry, promote the growth of light industries, develop communications, engineering and tool making. ​

Three good years 1934-36.​

A

Electricity output trebled. ​

Coal and iron output doubled. ​

Steel production increased by 1/3.​

Targets for chemical industry not met. ​

Consumer industries neglected. ​

Coal target: 75 million tonnes​

Actual: 64.4 million tonnes

Second FYP achievements

A

Dnieprostroi dam extended to become the largest dam in Europe. ​

New metals such as copper, iron and zinc were mined for the first time. ​

Steel output trebled​

Coal production doubled​

1937 the USSR was self sufficient in metal goods and machine tools. ​

1936 rearmament increasingly becomes focus: 4% GDP in 1933 17% 1937.​

Coal target: 152.5 ​Actual: 128 ​

Steel produced exceeds target ( 17 MT 17.7) ​

Tractors production massively under preforms ( t 166.7 thousand r: 66.5)​

1937 industrial slow down: emphasis on completing projects rather than starting new ones. ​

Steel stagnated, oil failed to meet targets: led to fuel crisis. ​
