hemophilia A Flashcards
classic hemophilia
Hemophilia A
Prolonged bleeding is the main
symptom.
circumcised.
after surgery or injury
Bleeding into joints
Hemophilia A
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time
Prothrombin time
Hemophilia A Diagnosis (Tests & Procedures)
● This test measures how long it takes for blood to clot.
● It measures the clotting ability of factors VIII, IX, XI, and XII.
● If any of these clotting factors are too low, it takes longer than normal for the blood to clot
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time
● This test also measures the time it takes for blood to clot
● It measures primarily the clotting ability of factors I, II, V, VII, and X
● If any of these factors are too low, it takes longer than normal for the blood to clot
Prothrombin time
● Measures the activity of factor VIII in the blood.
● This test is typically ordered to evaluate and monitor clotting disorders, such as
hemophilia A.
● The normal range for factor VIII activity in the blood is usually between 50-150% of
normal.
● Low levels of factor VIII activity in the blood suggest a higher likelihood of Hemophilia A
Serum Factor VIII Activity
no previous family
history of the disorder (spontaneously).
Hemophilia A
changes (variants or mutations) to
the F8 gene located on the X
chromosome
Hemophilia A
inherited or occur randomly with no previous family
history of the disorder (spontaneously)
Hemophilia A
mostly expressed in males
but some females who carry the gene
variant may have mild or, rarely, severe
symptoms of bleeding
