hemonc Flashcards
leukemia
cancer of marrow + lymph systems
LEUKOCYTE EXPLOSION!
myeloid vs lymphoid, acute or chronic
cure: bone marrow tx
leukemia types x2
acute or chronic
myeloid or lymphoid
acute myeloid leukemia
cancer of WBC - all immature
inhibits healthy WBC, RBC, and plt
BLASTS! BLASTS! BLASTS!
AML poor prognosis
- 50+
- secondary AML (s/t chemo tx)
- genetic mutation
AML s/s
fever fatigue pallor ecchymosis bone pain infection SOB
auer rods, pancytopenia, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, renal failure
acute lymphoid leukemia
rapid T & B in marrow
adults = BCR-ABL + philadelphia genes
tx: in-depth in/out hospital
chronic myeloid leukemia
- hallmark
- phases x3
slow growing, diagnosed at PCP office visits
- sx: chronic fatigue
- phases: chronic, accelerated, blast (dep on # blast in bone marrow)
lymphoma
cancer of B, T, NK cells
originating in the lymphatic system
- hodgkin vs non
hodgkin lymphoma sx/presentation
sx: fever, chill, night sweats, wt loss over mos
pres: large nodes, mediastinal mass
hodgkin lymphoma dx
PET (PDG+)
biopsy = Reed Sternberg cells !!!
Reed Sternberg cells
characteristic of hodgkin lymphoma
non-hodgkin lymphoma
everything else that isn’t hodgkin
tx: CHOP-R
multiple myeloma
malignant PLASMA CELLS (B-cells - monoclonal immunoglobulin)
proliferation in bone marrow, if mass occurs outside marrow: plasmacytoma
multiple myeloma hallmark sx
bone disease - pain, fractures d/t hypercalcemia bone turnover
also, anemia (marrow is wack)
multiple myeloma dx
10+% monoclonal plasma cell in bone marrow
+/- bx: plasmacytoma
monoclona protein in serum or urine
