Hematopoiesis - Lough Flashcards
What is the difference between red and yellow bone marrow?
Red marrow is hematopoietic and in the flat bones
Yellow marrow is fatty and in the long bones.
What are multipotent master stem cells?
progenitors of all the cell types in bone marrow
What varieties of stem cells can be found in bone marrow? What do they produce?
Multipotent master stem cells- produce all bone marrow cells
Mesenchymal stem cells- produce bone, endothelial cells
Hematopoietic stem cells- produce all blood cell progenitors
How are bone marrow cells sorted?
They are sorted by clusters of differentiation using FACS
How does FACS work?
Cells are incubated with antibodies that have a charged fluorophore. When they go through the machine, they are counted by the color emitted by the fluorophore and sorted into groups by the charge.
What three classes of cell are considered myeloid?
Granulocytes
Monocytes
Megakaryocytes
What is a colony forming unit?
What are some examples?
A chemokine/cytokine that activates growth of cells
erythropoietin
thrombopoietin
G-CSF (Granulocyte colony stimulating factor)
etc
What are the progenitors of the following cells:
Basophils
Neutrophils
Erythrocytes
Eosinophils
Basophils-Myeloblasts
Neutrophils-Myeloblasts
Erythrocytes- Proerythroblasts
Eosinophils-Myeloblasts
