Hematology Flashcards
What is the most common mechanism for anemia of inflammatory disease?
Decreased serum iron
What is the main immune protein involved in IMHA?
IgG
What are the anemia characteristics in microangiopathic hemolytic anemia?
Fragmented RBC’s (schistocytes) (e.g. hemangiosarcoma)
What is the antithrombotic factor in endothelium?
Thrombomodulin
Which test should be used for earliest detection of anti-coagulant rodenticide toxicity?
PT - tests extrinsic and common pathways, factor VII has the shortest half-life of the Vitamin K dependent factors (II, VII, IX, and X)
What are the anemia characteristics in hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma?
Regenerative anemia, infiltrative growth patterns of histiocytes in liver, spleen, lung, and bone marrow with phagocytosed RBC’s or hemosiderin. Coomb’s negative.
What are the anemia characteristics in immune mediated hemolytic anemia?
Regenerative anemia (typically unless very early stages or if is affecting the bone marrow), spherocytes, autoagglutination, and Coomb’s positive.
What shifts O2-Hgb curve to the right?
Hyperthermia
What is the characteristic of RBC’s after chronic blood loss?
Microcytosis
How does heparin affect clotting cascade?
Increases potency of antithrombin III (AT)
Hemophilia A what abnormality is seen?
Prolonged APTT
Which neoplasia can inhibit platelet function?
Multiple myeloma
