Q

Chloride shift

A

CO2 picked up from the tissue by RBCs is converted to HCO3- by carbonic anhydrase, this is then exchanged for Cl- in the venous blood.

This causes RBCs in arterial blood to have low Cl- concentraion and RBCs in venous blood to have higher Cl- concentration.
