What is the bystander effect?
- Presence of others inhibits helping in emergencies
- Less likely to notice, interpret as a problem or assume responsability
How does the bystander effect change with regard to violent emergencies?
Increase intervention - creates sense of safety
- De-escalates attention
What group membership factors affect the bystander effect?
Friends more likely to intervene
Less likely to intervene if from a different social/racial group
How do gender categories affect helping?
Presence of other women makes female participant more likely to help
Presence of women (least when presence of other men) make male participant more likely to help
What two conditions contribute towards the helping of an outgroup?
- When the image of the ingroup is at stake
- When the help is dependency orientated, outgroups in inferior/non-threatening position
When is outgroup help refused?
Awareness of stereotypes e.g women more likely to reject male help when made aware of the benevolent male stereotype
Low status groups may reject help percieved as dependency orientated
How can culture affect helping?
Study by Lavene 2001 showed negative relationship with regard to economic prosperity - more reliance on community for fufillment of basic needs?
