Helicobacter pylori Flashcards
What does it mean for H. pylori to be a “slow pathogen”
It can take a couple of weeks for H. pylori symptoms to show after infection
Where does H. pylori colonize?
It is only found in the mucous overlying the mucous secreting cells in the stomach
What diseases can be caused by H. pylori?
Superficial chronic gastritis Peptic ulcer disease Lymphoproliferative disease Chronic atrophic gastritis Gastric adenocarcinoma
All of the diseases that H. pylori can cause are predecessed by what?
Superficial chronic gastritis
Why is the production of urease important? How can the production of urease be useful for diagnosis?
Urease can change the ph. It is useful in diagnosis because it is the most sensitive specemin for testing
Why is the production of cytotoxin important?
It induces apoptosis and is associated with peptic ulcer disease
Why is an increase in gastrin production important for the development of H pylori mediated carcinogenesis?
Gastrin causes the host to proliferate cells and increase gastric acid, which can cause ulcers and mutations.
How can the enhanced inflammatory response from H pylori infection lead to carcinogenesis?
Inflammation leads to an increase in gastrin, which causes proliferation, which increases the risk for mutations.
What is atrophic gastritis?
Inflammation of the stomach that can lead to cell atrophy
