Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) Flashcards
1
Q
ETEC
A
Responsible for 30-45% of cases of traveler’s diarrhea when traveling to Mexico
2
Q
Infectious dose
A
Large
3
Q
Why is colinization factor antigen (cfa) inportant for virulence of ETEC?
A
It is on the fimbrae and help in adherance to the mucosal tissue
4
Q
What two toxins does ETEC produce?
A
Heat-labile toxin (LT)
Heat-stable toxin (ST)
5
Q
What does LT activate?
A
cAMP
6
Q
What does ST activate
A
cGMP
7
Q
How do ETEC toxins caise diarrhea?
A
Lt activates cAMP, and ST activates cGMP. When either cAMP or cGMP are increased, then Na enters the cell, making it positively charges. This causes Cl to leave the cell along with water.
