What are the 3 reasons of why we need to know about health and safety
- Legal - It’s the law
- Ethical - Looking after our people is the right thing to do
- Our business - Good health and safety is good business
How does HSWA define health (Health and safety at Work act 2015)
It is both physical and mental
Police must have effective systems for protecting people’s health physically and mentally from work related factors
What must Police ensure under sec 36 Primary duty of care
- Police employees
- Any other workers such as contractors and third parties
- Other people who could be put at risk by our work ie detainees and general public
What is the work environment
Includes physical and psychological work environment. Ie vehicles, custody areas, offices, peoples homes, courts and the street. Includes mental health not just physical injury and illness
What is reasonably practicable
There are two parts
- Consider what is possible in your circumstances to ensure health and safety
- Of the possible actions, consider what is reasonable to do in your circumstances
How do you control measures
By applying the Hierarchy of Controls
- Eliminate
- Minimised
as far as is reasonably practicable
How do you consider the cost of a control measure and determining if the costs grossly disproportionate to the risk
Consider the costs associated with eliminating or minimising risks including whether they are grossly disproportionate to the risk.
The cost can only be used as a reason to not do something when it is grossly disproportionate to the risk
What is a near miss
It is an unplanned or unexpected event that occurs as a result of Police work activities and under slightly different circumstances could have resulted in harm to a person but did not
What is the purpose of a work place health and safety review
To identify the system level causes of an adverse event so they can be addressed and appropriate preventive controls put in place to prevent the incident happening again
When should you notify worksafe
- Admitted to hospital
- Serious head injury
- Loss of consciousness
