What are the 6 principles that guide Police practice in FH
- Early intervention - this helps to stop and prevent FH. Requires eyes wide open approach
- Culturally appropriate - requires a sensitive approach to all FH investigations. Responses involving Maori should reflect Tikanga

What must Police balance when responding to FH involving Police employees?
They must balance their responsibilities as an employer to support employees and their families and to act consistently and appropriately with the public interest and reputation of police in mind
What two simultaneous actions should occur when dealing with employee FH
- normal police response
* welfare considerations and the shift supervisor should refer the matter to the local welfare officer
What must Police carefully consider when dealing with employee FH
- the impact of any criminal offending on the ability of an employee to remain a police employee
- the compatibility of an employee convicted of FH offence and/or being the respondent of a Protection Order to continue in a policing role
When do the policies and procedures apply in relation to police employees and family harm
- comes to supervisors attention
- Police attend FH investigation and although no offending a PSO or warning has been issued and/or Police are concerned about the possible continuation or escalation of FH
- Police attend and offending is disclosed where employee is victim or offender
- Police become aware a Protection Order has been issued

If an employee is charged or convicted of FH who must it be reported to
Reported by shift supervisor to the district employee practice manager and ppc manager who will advise the relevant DC or national manager
Who decides if an employee charged or convicted of FH should continue working
Employee practice manager in consultation with national manager. PPC at pnhq must consider the employees suitability to continue working in their current role and if any variation in duties is appropriate
Where does a copy of PO get sent to
DC or national manager
If an employee becomes the respondent of a PO whom must they inform
Must report it immediately in writing including details of the proceedings to their supervisor
Can police consider assisting an employee with an application to vary PO
Yes but only in rare cases relating to weapons under sec 108 of FV 2018.
Before supporting police must conduct their own enquiries to determine whether or not a variation is appropriate
Enquiries must consider nature duration and type of FH disclosed any offence history the employees role and views of protected person
The final decision will be made under sec 22 by DCE people in consultation with national manager and criminal investigations group
