What’s the difference between screening and diagnostic evaluation?
Screening identifies individuals with a possible hearing loss and diagnostic evaluation identify if hearing loss is present or not
For children, where does screening occur?
Typically in school/pediatrician office
For children, where does objective screening takes place and what equipment is used?
Pediatrics office & OAE
For children, where does behavioral screening take place and what equipment is used?
Schools & Audiometry
What is not screening audiometry?
A threshold search
Under ASHA guidelines, what is the procedure for screening audiometry?
- Only for AC
- Only use 1000, 2000, 4000 frequencies
- Only use 20dB HL for frequencies listed in #2
How do we know a child pass the screening audiometry?
If the child responds correctly 2 out of 3 times @ EVERY frequency in each ear
How do we know a child needs a referral?
When the child does not respond 2 out of 3 times at ANY frequency in EITHER ear
For children, what other equipment does ASHA recommend?
Tympanometry during screenings
For adults, where does screening typically occur?
Work, Medical Office, SLP office, or Free community screenings
For adults, is objective screening used?
No
For adults, what’s the procedure for behavioral screening with audiometry?
- Only use AC
- 1,2,4kHZ frequencies used
- Present tone to individual at 25 dB HL
For adults, how do you know they passed the screening?
If 2 out of 3 he/she responds at EVERY frequency in EACH ear
For adults, how do you know a referral needs to be made?
NO response 2 out of 3 times at ANY frequency in EITHER ear

- Universal Newborn Hearing Screening
- High Risk Registry
- ABR/OAE
