Health & Wellness Flashcards
What is the coach’s focus related to health and wellness information in the client-centered coaching relationship?
determining what the client already knows and what they need and wish to learn about.
The coach then supports the client in obtaining credible health and wellness information.
What are the symptoms of diabetes according to the CDC?
People with diabetes may have SOME or NONE of the following symptoms:
- Frequent unination
- Excessive thirst
- unexplained weight loss
- extreme hunger
- sudden vision changes
- tingling or numbness in hands or feet
- feeling very tired much of the time
- very dry skin
- sores that are slow to heal
- more infections than usual
Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pains may accompany some of these symptoms in the abrupt onset of Type 1 diabetes.
What are the types of diabetes?
Type 1 (5% of diagnosed cases) - caused by destruction of the beta cells in the pancreas
Type 2 (90% - 95% of diagnosed cases) - caused by insulin resistance and inability of the beta cells to produce enough insulin to reduce blood glucose levels.
Gestational Diabetes - diabetes in pregnant women. It usually disappears after pregnancy. Occurs in 2% to 10% of pregnancies.
Other 1% to 5% of diagnosed cases may be caused by genetic syndromes, surgery, drugs, malnutrition, infections, and other illnesses.
What are the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes?
Age Obesity Family history of diabetes Prior gestational diabetes Impaired glucose tolerance physical inactivity Race/Ethnicity (at higher risk: Hispanic/Latino and some Asian Americans, American Indians, Pacific Islanders.)
What is the chance of developing type 2 diabetes for a woman who has had gestational diabetes?
35% to 60% chance of developing diabetes in the next 10 to 20 years.
What are the risk factors for Type 1 diabetes?
The risk factors are less well defined than for type 2.
Autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors are involved.
What is the treatment for type 2 diabetes?
Healthy eating
Physical activity
Blood Glucose Testing
are the basic therapies for type 2
also
oral medication
insulin
or both
What is diabetes?
a disease that leads to high levels of blood glucose.
It happens when the pancreas does not make any (type 1) or enough (Type 2) insulin or does not use insulin well (Type 2).
What causes Type 1 Diabetes
The appearance of Type 1 diabetes is suspected to follow exposure to an environmental trigger such as an unidentified virus, stimulating an immune attack against the beta cells of the pancreas in some genetically predisposed people.
Can diabetes be prevented?
A number of studies have shown that regular physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is associated with obesity.
Is there a cure for diabetes?
Today, no medical cure is available.
Research is ongoing in the areas of pancreas transplantation, islet cell transplantation, artificial pancreas development, and genetic manipulation.
Research evidence does show that some dietary approaches which induce weight loss can reverse Type 2 diabetes. (added by me)
