When reviewing an assessment, what is the value in looking first for strengths and areas for celebration.
Based on AI philosophy “what we focus on grows” and “our first questions are fateful”.
By searching for strengths on the well-being assessment we can formulate strength based inquiries for our coaching sessions.
During an initial coaching conversation, how does one best approach the client with information gleaned from an assessment?
-
• Ask the client what questions they have after completing the well-being assessment
- Ask the client what insights they discovered while completing the well-being assessment •
What is the potential impact of making assumptions about a client?
We may mistakenly think we understand their experience when we really do not. Inquiry can help the coach understand the client’s actual experience.
It should never be assumed that assessments completed ahead of time reveal the whole story or reflect how the client will be feeling when the first coaching conversation takes place.
Mistakes or misinterpretation of questions can sometimes occur when completing forms.
How might a client’s stage of change impact the first coaching session?
• The coach’s approach needs to be adjusted based on the stage of change
• The types of goals selected will be different depending on the stage ◦ Early stage goals are more cognitive (thinking, learning, researching)
◦ Later stage goals will be action oriented
