Actions people undertake that influence their health status
Health Risk Behaviour
Any activity undertaken by people with a frequency or intensity that increases risk of disease or injury
Factors associated with health risk behaviour
- Unhealthy diet
- Obesity
- Physical inactivity
- Smoking
- Risky sexual practices
- Non-adherence to medical regimes
- Alcohol Consumption
Psychoactive medication
Can reduce/eliminate the suffering caused by psychological conditions (anxiety, depression, insomnia etc)
How do psychoactive drugs work?
They act on the CNS to alter mood, cognition and behaviour
What are the 5 main classes of psychoactive drugs?
- Opiates/opioids > (E.g. heroin, methadone)
- Stimulants > (E.g. cocaine, nicotine)
- Depressants > (E.g. tranquillisers, antipsychotics, alcohol)
- Hallucinogens > (E.g. LSD)
- Marijuana and Hashish
What two main groups of harm can psychoactive drugs cause?
Toxicity
Dependence
What are the pleasurable effects of alcohol?
Happier
Confident
Relaxed
What are the non-pleasurable effects of alcohol?
Inhibits brain function
Impairs judgement
Dampens motor and sensory centres
Impairs coordination
Substance dependence
Increased tolerance towards the substance so that more is required to achieve effects; experience of withdrawal
