Health Assessments- TEST 2 Flashcards
Common Themes to Define Health (2)
1) Premature Death is undesirable

- health status of nations is often measured in mortality rates or infant mortality deaths
2) Quality of Life is important

- ->Major and minor diseases are evaluated in terms of the degree to which they affect life quality and life expectancy
What is Health-Related Quality of Life?
-Many measures examine the effect of disease/disability on performance of social role, ability to interact in the community and physical functioning
Two Major Approaches to Quality of Life Assessment
1) Psychometric and Decision Theory-attempts to provide separate measures for the many different dimensions of quality of life (ie, Sickness Impact Profile-SIP)
- this approach often concludes that some aspects of quality of life improve while others decline
2) Decision Theory Approach-Attempts to weight the different dimension of health in order to provide a single expression of health status
- views different health problems as not being of equal concern
- attempts to provide an overall measure of quality of life that integrates subjective function states, preferences for these states, morbidity and mortality.
