Health and balanced diet Flashcards
What’s a healthy diet?
A balanced diet is made up l
What do u need for a balanced diet?
Carbohydrates, protein, fat, minerals and vitamins, fiber and water.
Carbohydrates-
Consists starch and different types of sugars(glucose)
We need it for energy
Examples of carbohydrates
Bread, pasta, rice, cereals.
Chemical test for starch
Iodine solution-
Add 2 drops of yellow iodine solution
Yellow/brown🟨🟫➡️blue/black🟦⬛️ (if starch is present)
Chemical test for glucose
Benedict’s solution
Add a few drops of bs to food solution
Heat in water bath until it boils
If there is a lot of sugar➡️red🟥
Medium sugar➡️ orange 🟧
Little sugar ➡️ green🟩
Fat-
Fat are made from fatty acids and glycerol.
We need fatty acids for a store of energy and to make cell membranes and for warmth.
Chemical tests for fat
Grease proof paper
Out the fat on GPP then wait
If there is fat then the GPP will become transparent.
Water
Water is very important Because
Outer main plasma is mainly water
Water is in sweat then lets us cool down
Chemical reactions in our cells take place in water.
Waste products are removed from our bodies in water.
Vitamins and minerals
We only need these in small amounts but they are essential for good health
Many vitamin and minerals are found in food, vegetables and cereals
What happens if u don’t eat enough of vitamin d?
And why is it good?
Skin cracks and gum bleed (scurvy)
It is good for keeping the skin strong and supple.
What happens if u don’t eat enough of vitamin D?
Why is it important for u?
Bones stay soft without it (rickets)
Helps bones harden in children.
What happens if u don’t eat enough vitamin A?
Why is it important?
U can’t see at night
If u eat it u can see better at night.
Protein-
Key parts of your body cells are mostly made of proteins
Proteins are made up of lots of amino acids
We need protein to repair and replace damaged cells or to make new cells during growth
Chemical tests for protein
Biuret test
Add some copper sulphate to the food solution
Add sodium hydroxide to the solution
If protein is present, the solution gradually turns 🟪purple
