Q

Know Life Expectancy Patterns (Differences by gender and race)

A

Women can expect to live, on average, 7 years longer than men. As of 1990, women’s life expectancy was 79.3. Projections for 2020 are 81.8. The greater longevity is due to the fact that heart attacks, cancer, and stroke are more prevalent in men. Other factors may have to do with a woman’s sensitivity to changes in her body condition, which makes a woman more likely to seek out earlier medical intervention.

Define Ageism

A

“the prejudiced behavior of individuals and systems within the culture against older adults, including the negative consequences of inaccurate stereotyping of the elderly.” Ageism has been called the third “ism” following racism and sexism. Whereas racism and sexism prevent racial minorities and women and in what is called “reverse sexism” men from developing full potential as people, ageism limits the potential development of individuals based on age.
