What is a hazard?
A situation that requires the driver to respond by performing an action like braking or steering
What type of hazards are there?
- Static hazards
- Moving hazards
- Road and weather conditions
Name 7 different static hazards
- Bends
- Roundabouts
- Junctions
- Parked vehicles
- Skips in the road
- Roadworks
- Traffic calming measures
What do you do if traffic lights are out of order?
Treat the junction as an unmarked crossroads and proceed with caution
Why are parked cars a hazard?
- Children could jump out from behind the cars
- The car doors could open
- Car could move away
Why should you take extra care on 2-way roads?
There could be a third lane in the middle that is used for overtaking both ways
What should you do if you are on the motorway and see a hazard or obstruction?
Use hazard lights to warn others behind you
What do you need to be aware of when you are near a cyclist?
- They may wobble so give them plenty of room
- At junctions give them time to turn or pull away
- Before you turn left check for cyclists on your left
What do you need to be aware of when you are near a bus at a bus stop?
- Pedestrians could get off the bus and cross in front of it
- Bus could move off at any time
What kind of vehicles will have signs on the back of them if they are hazardous?
- Road maintenance vehicles
- Large goods vehicles over 13m long
- Vehicles carrying hazardous chemicals
When should you not overtake?
- When the view ahead is blocked
- If you are turning left shortly after
- When approaching a junction
- If signs prohibit this
What do you do if a car is about to reverse out in front of you?
Reduce your speed and be prepared to stop. Sound your horn to warn them or if it’s late at night, flash your lights
