How is timber made ?
Once a tree is chopped down the branches are removed
Trunks are then transported to a sawmill where they are cut into usable planks
When the planks are green the still contain a lot of water which is removed by drying the wood with a kiln or air
What is a hardwood ?
- Deciduous trees that loose their leaves in winter
- generally grow in climates such as that of the British isles
- grow very slowly hence they are expensive
- grow wide- good for cutting huge planks
What are hardwoods used for ?
Expensive products like furniture and flooring
Usually harder due to tighter grain structure
What are the properties of ash and what are its uses ?
Hardwood
- pale creamy cloud, tough, absorbs shock, attractive
- sports equipment, furniture and tool handles
What are the properties of oak and what are its uses ?
Hardwood
- light brown color, very strong and hard, corrodes steel screws and fittings
- interior woodwork and good quality furniture, flooring
What are the properties of beech and what are its uses ?
Pale pinkish brown in colour, hard, tough, can be bent using steam
Furniture and toys
What are the properties of mahogany and what are its uses ?
Dark reddish brown colour, durable and easy to work however it’s rare and expensive
Often used in good quality furniture
What are the properties and uses of balsa ?
Pale creamy color, low density, lightweight and soft, easy to cut and shape (outliner to hardwoods)
Modeling, crafting, toy planes
