How are boards made ?

A

Made using waste wood by gluing wood chips or shavings together

Therefore inexpensive and often are an alternative to solid woods

A

A veneer real wood to improve their appearance

Good for industrial production as they can be made in large quantities

What are veneers ?

A

Thin surface/ layer of finely grained wood glued to a base of inferior material
It’s a cost effective way of improving boards aesthetics
Thin layers glued together to make a plywood

What are the 2 main techniques for making veneers ?

A

Sliced- peeling thin strips from planks
Rotary cut- “unrolling” the layers from an entire trunk

What is the description of, use aswell as pros+ cons of MDF

A

Description: tiny softwood fibres held together by glue. No grain but can be veneered

Uses: flat pack furniture, shelves and school projects

Pros- cheap and dense
Cons- damaged by moisture and dangerous to inhale

A

Description: an odd number of veneers glued together at right angles. End can be veneered with strip

Uses: construction, furniture and school projects

Pros: very strong for weight and thickness, attractive sides
Cons: more expensive, unnatractive ends
