Composite Materials Flashcards
What are composite materials ?
Materials made up of different materials which are combined to improve their properties
What are the three main catagories of composite materials ?
- Fibre based composites
- Particle based composites
- sheet based composites
What are fibre- based composites ?
- Composites made with reinforced fibres
- This is done by mixing resin or concrete with fibers of glass and carbon
- Which allows us to mould complex shapes, but reinforcing them with fibers allows them to be extremely strong
What are the three FIBRE- based composites ?
Glass reinforced plastic (GRP)
carbon reinforced plastic (CRP)
Glass reinforced concrete (GRC)
Lots of G’s, C’s and P’s going on here 👎
What materials are used to make GLASS reinforced PLASTIC and what are its uses ?
Materials
- glass fibers and resin
Uses
- boats, instrument cases
What materials are used to make CARBON reinforced PLASTIC and what are its uses ?
Materials
- carbon fibre and resin
Uses
-Formula 1 car bodies, crash helmets and sports equipment
What are the materials used to make GLASS reinforced CONCRETE and what are its uses ?
Materials
- glass fibres and concrete ( very easy)
Uses
- street furniture, urban features
What are particle based composites ?
Made with small particles of materials
- this is achieved by mixing smaller particles of sand with larger molecules of cement and aggregate such as stones
- giving us a very strong and dense material suitable for larger building structures
What are the two particle based composites ?
Concrete
Cermet ( not cement this is very different so don’t get them confused)
What were the materials used in CONCRETE and what are its uses ?
Materials
- cement, sand and aggregate
Uses
- buildings and street furniture
What are the materials used in CERMET and what are its uses ?
Materials
- ceramic (Cer) and metal ( met)
Uses
- electronic comment nets that operate under very hot temperatures
