Hand Flashcards
Describe the joints of the hand from proximal to distal.
Carpometacarpal joints.
Metacarpophalangeal joints.
Interphalangeal joints.
Describe the joints of the hand and the ligaments around them.
Synovial joints.
Wrist ligaments are stronger on volar side, form strong longitudinal, transverse & oblique bonds, and allow carpal bone motion.
Carpal bones articulate with the radius, not the ulna.
What makes up the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints?
Collateral ligaments & volar plate.
MCP - collateral ligaments taut in mcp flexion.
IP - collateral ligaments taut in mcp extension.
Describe the pathway of arteries form the forearm into the hand.
Radial & Ulnar
Forms a superficial and deep palmar arch.
Ulnar - Superficial arterial arch.
Radius - Deep arterial arch.
Where are the veins of the hand and what are they?
More dorsal.
2 Ulnar, 1 Radial.
Deep and superficial.
Drain into the brachial and cephalic veins.
What is the function of the radial nerve in relation to the hand?
Innervates extensors, posterior compartments.
Skin on the dorsoradial hand.
What is the function of the median nerve in relation to the hand?
Innervates some flexors, pronators, intrisics.
Skin on the palmar, radial hand.
What is the function of the ulnar nerve in relation to the hand?
Innervates some flexors, intrinsics,
Skin on the palmar, ulnar hand.
What intrinsic muscles does the median nerve innervate?
Thenar.
What intrinsic muscles does the ulnar nerve innervate?
Hypothenar.
On your hand, trace (with finger) the outline of the sensory areas.
Ulnar, Palm, Ulnar side, 5th and half 4th digit.
Median, Remainder of palm, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and half 4th digits.
Radial, Dorsoradial hand, up to 2nd and 3rd digits, proximal phalanges. Small portion Lateral border of 1st metacarpal.
List the structures that hold the flexor tendons onto the bones of the fingers.
Volar plate,
Annular ligament
Transverse metacarpal ligament
Cruciate pulleys.
Describe Abductor pollicis brevis.
Origin: Flexor retinaculum, trapezium
Insertion: Lateral aspect of base of proximal phalanx of thumb.
Action: Abduct pollux
Nerve Supply: Median
Describe Flexor pollicis brevis.
Origin: (Two heads)
Flexor retinaculum, floor of carpal tunnel, scaphoid & trapezium.
Insertion: Base, proximal phalanx of thumb
Action: Flexion of pollux
Nerve Supply: Superficial head median nerve, deep head, ulnar nerve.
Describe Opponens Pollicis.
Origin: Flexor retinactulum, trapezium
Insertion: Lateral aspect of the fist metacarpal.
Action: Opposes thumb
Nerve Supply: Median
