Hamstring injury Flashcards
1
Q
Mechanism of Injury
A
-max sprinting
2
Q
what happens during late swing phase?
A
- Hamstrings undergoing active lengthening contraction
- peak hamstring stretch occurs prior to foot contact
- hamstrings are absorbing energy
3
Q
What are the symptoms of hamstring injury?
A
- sudden pain
- bruising
- swelling
- muscle spasm/ cramp
- audible pop
- decrease strength
- do they continue to play?
- gait pattern
- maybe recurring problem
4
Q
What are the signs of hamstring injury?
A
- bruising
- swelling
- pain on palpation
- palpable defect
- muscle weakness
- decrease flexibility
- gait pattern
5
Q
what investigations?
A
- Ultrasound
- MRI
6
Q
What modifiable risk factors are there?
A
- muscle strength and balance
- hamstring flexibity
- lumbar spine and pelvis
- posture
- fatigue
- hydration
- training errors
- warm up
7
Q
How is muscle strength a risk factor
A
Strength imbalance between eccentric hamstrings and concentic quads = x increase in risk of hamstring injury
8
Q
how is lumbar spine and pelvis a risk factor?
A
- motor control / activiationof trunk stabilisers
- control of anterior and posterior pelvic tilt
- lack of activation may increase load on hamstrings
9
Q
What treatment would you issue
A
- POLICE
- NSAID’s V pain killers
- pain free active ROM exercises
- flexibility
- soft tissue rehab
- core/ trunk stability
- strengthening
- balance/ proprioception
- functional/ sport specific exercises
- consider risk factors
10
Q
what are the benifits of eccentric strengthening?
A
- overloads the muscle
- ehhance muscle mass, flexibility, strength and power more than concentric training
- improves muscle ability to absorb more energy
11
Q
What treatment would you give?
A
Surgery
