Haemoglobin synthesis Flashcards
1
Q
what is the Embden–Meyerhof pathway?
A
- glycolysis which converts glucose into pyruvate
- Free energy released forms ATP
- Oxygen free
- Due to lack of mitochondria within mature erythrocytes
2
Q
what are the 2 O2 carrying molecules?
A
– Myoglobin (oxygen storage in red muscle)
– Haemoglobin (carrier in red cells)
3
Q
what are the 2 major components of normal adult haemoglobin A?
A
- Globin chains.
- A prosthetic group Haem, comprising a tetrapyrolle ring structure with Fe(II) at its centre
4
Q
where does haem synthesis occurs mainly?
A
mitochondria
5
Q
when does Hb synthesis occur?
A
65% occurs during late normoblast stage of rbc development
remaining 35% made during the reticulocyte stage after loss of nucleus
