Haematology- Practical Blood Banking Flashcards
What are some of the risks when transusing blood?
Wrong type of blood
TACO- transfusion associated circulatory overload
TRALI- transfusion-related acute lung injury
ATR- acute haemolytic transfusion reaction
Would you transfuse RBCs?
72-year old lady with haematemesis admitted to the acute medical assessment unit with a Hb of 106g/L.
No
->Hb is a useless guide to severity of anaemia
->
Would you transfuse RBCs?
76-year-old with Hb 54 g/L and
blood film consistent with megaloblastic anaemia.
No
->due to megaloblastic anaemia
Would you transfer RBCs?
48-year-old lady admitted for a planned hysterectomy with Hb of 95 g/L.
No
->bloods should be monitored weeks before, not just upon admission
->she’s probs iron deficient because of heavy periods??
->want to give iron supplements and return in a few weeks
idk these questions are so weird
Would you transfer platelets?
A patient on chemotherapy with platelets of 12.
Yes
->girl idk
Would you transfer platelets?
A patient with massive haemorrhage but no platelet results.
Yes
->don’t know platelet count but patient has likely brought a lot of blood so better just to give it
Would you transfer platelets?
A patient with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
No
->do not correct numbers by giving FFP?
Would you transfer FFP?
A bleeding patient on warfarin?
No
->cannot give enough FFP to correct coagulation factors and match enough blood before going into fluid overdrive
Would you transfuse FFP?
A bleeding patient with factor VIII deficiency.
No
->use factor VIII concentrate
What causes megaloblastic anaemia?
Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency
How long after removing component from the fridge should the transfusion be completed?
4hrs
