Anaesthetics- Critical Care Flashcards
Difference between type 1 and 2 respiratory failure?
Type 1- oxygenation failure only
Type 2- oxygenation and ventilation failure so build up of CO2
Management of type 1 respiratory failure?
Oxygen
Management of type 2 respiratory failure?
Continuous positive airway pressure and oxygen
RECPA- what is shock?
Acute circulatory failure with inadequate distribute tissue perfusion resulting in cellular hypoxia
Types of shock?
Distributive- septic
Hypovolaemic
Anaphylactic
Neurogenic
Cardiogenic
What is, by far, the most common type of shocj?
Septic shock
What do you give a patient who is hypotensive?
Fluid
Which equation allows the calculation of cardiac output?
CO= HR x SV
In terms of fluids, what’s the difference between colloids and crystalloids?
Colloids- fluid with larger molecules in it with osmotic activity e.g. albumin
Crystalloids- fluid with small molecules in it e.g. sodium, potassium
List some crystalloids.
Saline, dextrose, plasmalite
Why is dextrose a terrible resuscitation fluid?
Immediately gets metabolised to water in the bloodstream by RBCs
