S+S anaemia
Fatigue, weakness, palpitations, SOB, light-headedness, cold hands + feet
What is iron deficiency anaemia?
Most common type, due to shortage of iron in diet
Can’t produce enough Hb to make RBC
Can occur in pregnancy
Also caused by blood loss, cancers, ulcers + aspirin
What is vitamin deficiency + pernicious anaemia?
Folate + B12 deficiency - pernicious anaemia is when the body can’t process the vitamins
What is aplastic anaemia?
Due to infections, autoimmune disease + meds - life threatening
What is haemolytic anaemia?
RBCs destroyed faster than they’re made
What is ITP?
Idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura
Low platelets causing purpuric rash
Autoimmune
Treat with steroids, immunoglobulins + platelets
What is DIC?
Disseminated intravascular coagulation
Clots formed in small vessels, using up platelets + clotting factors so bleeding occurs elsewhere (bleeding in skin, haematuria etc)
Caused by sepsis, surgery, trauma, cancer
