Haematology (12 minute medicine) Flashcards
what breeds have a naturally high red cell mass?
sighthounds, greyhounds
how does red cell mass change with age?
puppies often have lower RBC counts
once anaemia has been diagnosed, what should the next step be?
determine if it is regenerative or not
what part of haematology report is looked at to determine if anaemia is regenerative?
erythrocyte indexes (MCV and MCHC)
what values of MCV and MCHC would make you suspect a regenerative anaemia?
increased MCV
decreased MCHC
(young erythrocytes are larger with less haemoglobin)
what type of anaemia would be expected with a low MCV and low MCHC?
iron deficiency anaemia
what is the difference between a haematocrit and PCV?
haematocrit uses red cell count
PCV uses the proportion of the sample that are RBCs
what blood tube is used for haematology?
EDTA - preserves cell morphology
when should you make blood smear straight away after taking the sample?
changes to morphology of RBCs can happen over time such as echinocytosis
blood from which tube should be used for a blood smear?
fresh anti-coagulated blood from an EDTA
what is the best area of a blood smear to assess morphology of cells?
monolayer
why would you look in the feathered edge of a blood smear?
detect presence of platelet clumps (lavender coloured clumps of cells)
