H03: Epithelium Flashcards
What is the mucociliary escalator?
Goblet cells + cilia in pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelia
What are epithelial cells found as?
Surface linings, interface of biological compartments, gland linings.
What is the blood supply of epithelium?
There is none, epithelia is avascular.
How is the basement membrane formed?
It’s secreted by the epithelial cells & underlying fibroblasts.
What epithelia does the ectoderm give rise to?
Epithelia in oral cavity, epidermis & corneal epithelia.
What epithelia does the mesoderm give rise to?
Simple columnar ciliated epithelia, transitional epithelia, epithelia of the blood system & serous membranes.
What epithelia does the endoderm give rise to?
Epithelia of the GI & respiratory tracts
What is the function of epithelia?
Protection, absorption, secretion & excretion, contractility.
State the names of the 4 types of simple epithelia.
Simple squamous epithelia,
Simple columnar epithelia,
Simple cuboidal epithelia,
Simple columnar ciliated epithelia.
State the names of the 4 types of stratified epithelia.
Stratified squamous epithelia,
Stratified columnar epithelia,
Stratified cuboidal epithelia,
Stratified squamous keratinised epithelia.
State the names of the 2 types of epithelia that are not stratified or simple.
Pseudostratified ciliated epithelia
Transitional epithelia
