Purpose of railings?
Adding stability to the deck and protecting people from falling off decks
Installing deck boards
Decks are usually attached/support on one or two sides of the building that they serve. This can be done by fastening a ledger to the building or using joist hangers. Use lag screws, nails, or solid wall fasteners for attaching ledgers and use spacers to keep ledger away from the wall
What should you do when working with preserved wood?
-wear a dust mask, eye protection, and cover skin when cutting or sanding treated wood
-wear gloves when working with treated wood.
-wash hands before eating after handling treated wood
-do not burn preserved wood (smoke can be toxic)
-do not use preserved wood as mulch.
-be aware that preservative may dislodge from wood and migrate into the soil or ground water. Care must be taken to prevent this from happening.
-Properly store or dispose of any leftover preservative.
-all fasteners and hangers must be of a type that is compatible with the preservative used on the deck material as it can be very corrosive to metal

-install concrete footings, columns or piers
-install posts and beams
-install joists and other framing
-install decking and waterproof membrane if applicable
-install flashing where required
-build stairs if applicable
-install rails an guards for railing system
-stain or paint where applicable
