Some movements are difficult to explain.
Can lead to informational overload.
Positives of verbal guidance?
Positively reinforce the correct movements
Negatively reinforce the wrong movements (autonomous only)
Can be motivational
Who is verbal guidance best for?
Mainly autonomous as they have spare attentional capacity so can add tactics during the game.
What is visual guidance?
Demonstrating how to do a skill
Negatives of visual guidance?
Demonstrations could be incorrect
May be unclear/too quick to follow
Performers may not selectively attend to correct aspects of the skill
May be unable to retain information
May not be able to reproduce skill mentally or physically
Performers might not be motivated
Positives of visual guidance?
Easy to form mental images Slowed to make easier to understand Can be seen in different stages Encourage observational learning Can draw attention to important cues Easy to use verbal guidance with it.
Who is visual guidance best for?
Cognitive performers
Very important in forming mental image
What is manual guidance?
Physically supporting the performer
Negatives of manual guidance?
Performer may feel uncomfortable Doesn't develop true kinaesthetic sense Could decrease motivation May become dependent on help Intrinsic feedback could be wrong, leading to poor technique.
Positives of manual guidance?
Gives an early kinaesthetic sense
Reduces performers fear
Increase confidence, increase motivation
Who is manual guidance best for?
Cognitive performers as they don’t yet have a kinaesthetic sense.
What is mechanical guidance?
Using objects/apparatus to help coach a skill
Negatives of mechanical guidance?
Performer could become dependent on it
Doesn’t develop true kinaesthetic sense
Reduced participation, decrease motivation
Intrinsic feedback could be wrong, leading to poor technique.
