Classification Flashcards
What 3 factors affect motor skills classification?
Precision of the movement.
Whether the movement has a definite beginning/end.
Affect of the environment on the performance of the skill
What are the 6 classification continua?
Muscular involvement Environmental influencer Continuity Pacing Difficulty Organisational
Describe high organisation skills
Difficult to break down into sub routines
Describe low organisation skills
Made of sub routines that are easily separated
Describe open skills
Require the performer to adapt
Affected by the environment
High perceptual load
Describe closed skills
Habitual
Set movement
Unaffected by the environment
Describe gross skills
Large muscle groups
Little concern for precision
Describe fine skills
Small muscle groups
Usually involves accuracy
Describe discrete skills
Clear beginning and end
Repeatable but performer must stop and then start the skill again.
Describe serial skills
Skills that have a number of discrete elements put together in a definite order to make a sequence.
Describe continuous skills
No clear beginning/end. One cycle of movement is the beginning of the next. Requires repetition of the movement to make sense.
Describe self-paced skills
Performer controls the rate at which the skill is executed
Describe externally-paced skills
Environment controls the rate at which the skill is executed.
Describe simple skills
Few decisions to make.
Usually learnt as a whole.
Usually repetitive in nature.
Describe complex skills
Many decisions to make.
High perceptual load.
Focusing on irrelevant information could cause attentional wastage.
