To explain how to perform complex skills/ tactics
Most effective if instructions are clear/ concise, and can be heard
Also if built on visual guidance
Disadvantages of verbal guidance
Less effective for performers in the cognitive stage of learning as it leads to information overload
Also if inaccurate leads to errors
Manual guidance
Use of physical manipulation to aid learning
Advantages of manual/ mechanical guidance
Effective for cognitive stage of learning
Increased confidence
Increased safety
Develops kinesthesis
Disadvantages of manual/mechanical guidance
Over reliant
False kinesthesis
Performer may not like being touched by coach
