Aggression Flashcards
Aggression definition
The intent to harm outside the rules of the game
Instinct theory- trait approach
Trait of aggression is a stable and enduring, consistent, innate predisposition
Every individual has the trait of aggression which can be spontaneously released at any time
Strengths of the trait approach
Aggression can be innate
Some people are aggressive in all situations
Weaknesses of the trait approach
Too simplistic/ generalised
All humans aren’t aggressive
Aggression is often learned
Social learning theory of aggression
Proposes that aggression is learnt via;
Environment, imitation of significant others and social reinforcement (WATCH & COPY)
Strengths of Social learning theory
Bobo doll experiment supports idea
Evidence that aggression can be imitated from significant others
Weaknesses of Social learning theory
Not everyone imitates aggressive role models
Doesn’t take into account innate traits
Frustration aggression hypothesis
Goal directed behaviour is blocked which leads to frustration
If frustration can be released this is known as catharsis
If frustration cannot be released or player is punished aggression will continue to rise
Strengths of Frustration aggression hypothesis
Frustration can lead to aggression
More realistic than instinct theory
Takes into account the environment
Weaknesses of Frustration aggression hypothesis
Not everyone becomes aggressive when frustrated
Aggression can still occur without trigger/ obstacle
Aggressive Cue Hypothesis
Frustration leads to increased arousal
Increased arousal alongside the presence of aggression cue leads to an increased chance of aggression
Increased arousal alongside NO aggressive cue leads to a decreased chance of aggression
Strengths of Aggressive Cue Hypothesis
Frustration can lead to increased arousal
Aggressive cues can lead to aggression
Takes into account the environment
Weaknesses of Aggressive Cue Hypothesis
People learn to walk away from aggressive cues
