Growth of Apartheid 1955-59 Flashcards
Who was Hendrik Verwoerd?
The prime minister of SA from 1958-66
What did Hendrik Verwoerd argue?
That completed segregation benefits individual and national development resulting in greater national pride
Why was Hendrik Verwoerd popular with Afrikaners?
- He called for complete segregation, whilst also exploiting black SA labour
- Used language of white supremacy
- Aimed to reduce resistance to apartheid
- Totally benefitted them
What did Hendrik Verwoerd do?
He offered black SAs the apparent chance to develop was they wanted in their homelands separately from whites. These homelands could become completely independent nations, nicknamed “Bantustans”, but no other nations recognised them for they were too small with little social or economic strength
What did the Bantu Self-Government Act 1959 do?
Put some of the Tomlinson Report’s suggestions into law. It set up 8 homelands, called “Bantustans”, to be, eventually, completely independent states to remove large portions of the black SA population leaving white SAs the largest racial group.
Why did blacks dislike Bantustans?
They were very overcrowded, poor and not contiguous meaning that it was very difficult to rule them
