What 2 things are required for growth during infancy?
Nutrition and insulin.
What 2 things are required for growth during mid-childhood?
Growth hormone and thyroxine
What 2 things are required for growth during puberty?
Growth hormones and sex hormones.
What are 2 causes of a short stature?
Inadequate nutrition, chronic illness, chromosomal disorders e.g. Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS), Tourette syndrome (TS). Endocrine causes e.g. hypothyroidism.
What is coeliac disease?
A common digestive condition where the small intestine becomes inflamed and unable to absorb nutrients
Give 3 symptoms of coeliac disease.
Tiredness, bloating, anaemia, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion.
What characterises Turner Syndrome?
Having only has one normal X sex chromosome, rather than the usual two. They are short in stature.
What does SHOX stand for?
Short stature homeobox. Deficiency of this gene results in a short stature.
