Describe the development of power
Arrange selves into social hierarchies based on power starting at age 2. Power hierarchies make group interactions run smoothly. Determines how resources are divided.
Define power
Ability to control ones own and other’s resources

Status, authority and dominance
Describe the approach-inhibition theory of power
High sense of control and freedom. High power = action, approach, touching, doing things. Low power = inaction, inhibition, retreating.
Define individuation
Reduced sense of individual identity accompanied by increased impulsive behaviour that occurs when people are in a large group. Effects enhanced by any features that decrease identifiability

Ppts primed to feel powerful or powerless. Placed in room with fan - primed powerful were more likely to turn fan off.

What is the relationship between money and power?
Having money makes you feel less powerful as reminds them of spending it. Less empathetic and helpful. Work harder, more motivated. Holding money makes you less worried about being excluded.
State 3 examples of deindividuation
Suicide bating - increases as conditions are likely to increase anonymity. Crowd size and time of day influence. War practices - culture deindividuated. Halloween mayhem
Describe Diener’s study on trick or treaters
1000 trick or treaters alone or in a group. Asked 1/2 their names, told to take 1 piece of candy. Deindividuation led to stealing. Anonymous and in groups - most likely to take more
Explain Gilavich’s research into t-shirts
Put on unflattering t-shirt of Barry Manilow and enter and leave room of students. Thought 50% would remember shirt, but only 25% did.
Define self-awareness theory
Focus attention on selves, because concerned with self-awareness
What is individuation?
Enhanced sense of individual identity which causes people to act carefully. Opposite to deindividuation.
Summarise Diener’s research on anagrams
Told to solve anagrams, asked to stop when they heard bell. Payment depended on number solved. 75% working at normal desk worked past the bell, 10% working by mirror worked past the bell
