Stages of Group Formation
- Forming
- Storming
- Norming
- Performing

Forming
Excited and eager. Positive outlook and expectations. Creates structure and goals, builds trust, establish expectations about product and process.
Storming
Frustration and anger at process and progress and not being able to achieve goals. Must redefine goals, roles, and tasks.
Norming
Resolve discrepancies, accept others, value others and refocus ground rules. More focus on goal and evaluate team process and productivity.
Performing
Satisfaction with the progress, aware of strengths, confidence in self and them. Significant progress is made towards reaching the goal.
Adjourning
Sadness or sense of loss about the termination. Satisfaction of accomplishments. Complete tasks and evaluate process.
Ground Rules
A framework to synchronize expectations so the group can work smoothly together.
Mission statement
A broad statement which describes shared values. It may include your task, how you will treat each other and individual goals.
Group Roles
Clearly defined expectations of who will do what.
Meeting facilitator
Leads the group through the agenda, manages discussions, keeps track of time, summarizes, clarifies, makes sure everyone is involved.
Scribes
Records what was discussed, decisions made, and next steps.
Process Facillitator
Observes group processes and comments at the end of the meeting to improve how the group works together.
Project Work
This is done separate from the meetings
Project Managers
Organizes and coordinates everyone’s efforts - focusing on deliverables, timelines and commitments.
Resource
This person scans outside of the group to determine people who can bring different perspectives or insights.
