Q

What happens to the first ionisation energy and reactivity as we go down group 2?

A

1st ionisation energy decreases and reactivity increases as we go down group because there is more sheilding, the two electrons in the outer shell are less attracted to the nucleus making them easier to lose.

Q

What does the sheilding override?

A

The sheilding overrides the increasing nuclear charge in the group.

Q

What happens when group 2 metals react with water?

A

They react with water to form metal hydroxides + hydrogen.

Q

What happens to alkalinity/solubility as you go down the group?

A

The solubility will increase when going down the group because the strength of the ionic bond decreases down the group because the ionic radius increases. Hence making it easier to break down and more OH ions are released into the solution.

Q

What is the exception with magensium oxide?

A

Q

Trend of boiling point

A

The boiling point generally decreases down the group because there is more shielding therefore increased atomic radius resulting in weaker attractions between positive nucleus and outer electron- less energy required overcome between molecules except from magnesium

Q

Why does the boiling point decrease as you go down group?

A

Increased shielding, increased atomic radius less attraction between the positively nucleus and outer electron– weaker metallic bonding.
