Mechanism of Action (MOA)?

• CNS effects are mediated through the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
• Capable of producing all levels of CNS depression, from mild sedation to coma

• Seizures
• Sedation
• Management of acute agitation/excited delirium (treat cause as well, if possible)
• Induction for intubation

• Hypersensitivity
• Pregnancy (relative)
• Myasthenia gravis, COPD, acute alcohol intoxication (relative)

Adverse Reactions?

• CV: Hypotension, cardiac arrest, irregular or fast heartbeat
• Resp: Apnea, respiratory depression/arrest
• CNS: Emergence delirium, muscle tremor, dizziness, drowsiness, headache
• GI: Nausea and/or vomiting

Adult Dose?

Midazolam HCl (Versed) Adult Dose:

• 14 - 60 years of age: 2 - 5 mg IM
  
  • 1 - 10 mg IV/IO, titrate to effect administer slowly
• Over 60 years of age: 1 -5 mg IM
  
  • 1 - 3.5 mg IV/IO, titrate to effect administer slowly
• Total Dose: Should not exceed 20 mg
• Emergency Intubation: 0.1 mg/kg up to 0.3 mg/kg with dosage limit of 20 mg
  
  • 0.2 mg/kg IM or 0.3 mg/kg IN if no IV/IO access

• 0.05 to 0.1 mg/kg slow IV/IO push
