Drug Class: Loop Diruretic

Mechanism of Action (MOA)?
Furosemide (Lasix) MOA:
- Inhibits electrolyte reabsorbtion in the ascending Loop of Henle.
- Promotes sodium, potassium, and chloride excretion.
- Vasodilation increases venous capacitance and decreases afterload.

Indications?
Furosemide (Lasix) Indications:
Pulmonary edema, congestive heart failure

Contraindications?
Furosemide (Lasix) Contraindications:
- Hypovolemia
- Hypotension
- Sensitivity to sulfonamides (sulfa drugs) - may induce allergic reaction

Adverse Reactions?
Furosemide (Lasix) Adverse Reactions:
- Exacerbate hypovolemia
- Hyperglycemia
- Hypokalemia
- May decrease response to pressors

Adult Dose?
Furosemide (Lasix) Adult Dose:
- If patient is on oral furosemide therapy:
Initial IV dose of 2X patient’s prescribed oral dose, if no effect in 20 minutes may double initial dose.

If patient is NOT oral furosemide therapy:
0. 5 - 1 mg/kg to a maximum of 2 mg/kg (usually 20 - 40 mg) IV slowly
