group 1 Flashcards
group 1 metals are _____
soft
what happens as group 1 metals react with oxygen?
react rapidly and as we move down group one they react even rapidly
what are group 1 elements know as?
alkali metals
how many electrons in outer energy levels of group 1?
1
what happens to the reactivity as you move down group 1?
increase
what happens as lithium reacts with water?
- fizzing meaning gas is being produced. universal indicator turned. from green to purple meaning its made an alkaline solution
what happens as sodium reacts with water?
- gas being produced + alkaline solution
- reacts more rapidly with water than lithium
what happens ass potassium reacts with water?
- extremely rapid
- gas produced + alkaline solution forming
lithium + water
lithium hydroxide + hydrogen
why does reactivity increase as we go down group 1?
it gets easier to lose its outer electron because radius of atom increases. so distance between outer electron and positive nucleus gets further. as this distance increases, outer electron less attracted to nucleus.
shielding - inner energy levels decrease attraction between nucleus and outer electron. it increases as more electrons in elements.
