chemical reactions - reactivity series Flashcards
what is the reactivity series?
It is a series of elements where as you go down the elements get less reactive
potassium + water >
potassium hydroxide + hydrogen
(alkali) (gas)
vigorous reaction
how do potassium, sodium and lithium react with dilute acid?
dangerously reactive
how does calcium react with dilute acid?
extremely vigorously
how does magnesium react with dilute acid?
rapidly
how does zinc react with dilute acid?
quite rapidly
how does iron react with dilute acid?
how does copper react with dilute acid?
quite slow
no reaction
what happens when metals react?
they lose electrons to become a positive ion
what does the reactivity of a metal depend on?
the ability to lose an electron and form an ion
