energy changes - eco and endo Flashcards
what is an exothermic reaction?
a reaction that transfers energy from reacting molecules to the surroundings. this means temperature of surroundings increases
e.g oxidation, combustion, neutralisation
what does an exothermic reaction profile look like?
this is where the products have less energy than reactants
the difference between energy of reactants and energy of products is the energy being transferred to the surroundings
examples of exothermic reactions
hand warmers, self heating cans (food or drink)
what is an endothermic reaction
a reaction that takes in energy from their surroundings. this means the temperature of surroundings decreases
example of endothermic reaction
thermal decomposition
what does an endothermic reaction profile look like
the products will be higher up as they have more energy than reactants due to energy being taken in
the difference between energy of reactants and energy of products is the amount of energy being taken in
what is activation energy?
the minimum amount of energy that particles must have in order to react
when can reactions only occur?
when particles collide with each other with sufficient energy
where is the activation energy on an energy profile?
from the line of the reactants to the top of the curve
