Group 0, 1, 7 And Transition Metals Flashcards
What are the name of group 1?
Alkali metals
What are the properties of group 1 metals?
Soft, low melting points, low density, very reactive
How does relativity change in group 1?
More reactive down the group, lower boiling point down the the group
Why are group 1 metals so reactive?
They all have on electron in their other shell, this is very easy to do. The elements further down the group have lower energy shells so they are more easily lost
What is the name of group 7 elements?
Halogens
What type of molecules do halogens form?
Diatomic molecules - e.g. Cl2 they are simple molecular structures
What are the trends in group 7?
More reactive up the group, higher melting point down the group
Explain how trends in halogens work?
The electrons shells down the group have less energy so it is harder to gain an electron. Halogens gain electrons to become an ion. Smaller atoms gain electrons easier.
Do halogens displace and how?
Yes. More reactive halogens will always displace less reactive ones from a aqueous solution
Properties of group 0
All full electrons
Basically unreactive
Clear gas
What are the properties of transition metals?
Can from more than one ion
Normally catalysts
