Gross anatomy and histology of salivary glands Flashcards
Functions of saliva?
- digestive
- antibacterial
- mineral protection
- lubrication
- taste
- Hormone production
What is the structure of glands?
- tubuloacinar
- merocrine
- Parenchyma
- Stroma
- Ducts
What is parenchyma?
secretory tissue e.g. acini
How are acinar cells merocrine?
secrete products via secretory granules and cell undamaged
What is stroma?
connective tissue
What are functional areas in glands?
Lobules surrounded by stroma
What is mucous secretion?
viscous and not watery like serous
What are major salivary glands?
single structures enclosed by connective tissue
What are minor salivary glands?
contained in mucosa of Lip/cheek/palates/tongue
What are minor salivary gland secretions?
ALL MUCOUS except serous tongue
What are Glands of Von Ebner?
minor serous glands on dorsum of tongue beneath circumvallate papillae
Where are serous acini and ducts?
Parotid and serous part of submandibular
Why do cells of serous acinus look granular?
secretory granules
What is pathway of saliva once secreted?
lumen> intercalated duct> striated duct> secretory ducts> combine into one single suct
Where are mucous acini and ducts?
Sublingual gland and Submandibular mucous part
What are mucous acini like?
tubes
no intercalated or striated ducts
What are serous demilunes at end of mucous acini?
they are all serous secreting cells in sublingual
How is ductal system formed to edge of lobule?
just from mucous acini
What are stained white areas in parotid micrograph?
Fat cells- acini replaced by fat cells in ageing
What are on the lateral borders of dorsal circumvallate papilla?
taste buds in troughs
What allows taste buds to remain functional?
secretions from von Ebner glands embedded below papillae
What is submandibular duct opening into sublingual papilla called?
Whartons duct
Where does sublingual ducts open into?
floor of mouth around sublingual folds
