Graphology Flashcards
What does Graphology mean?
The study of the system of symbols which have been produced to communicate language in the written form.
The Writing System
The 26 letters that form the alphabet.
Font styles
Printed is usually more formal (word processed style) and documents are usually in Ariel (size 12). Cursive is less formal. Modern and old fonts can be used e.g. Christmas cards- show/represent idyllic past and traditional writing of the past.
Orthography
This means spelling. Americans spell words differently e.g. color. Adverts/newspaper headlines may play on spelling to create a dramatic or comedic effect e.g. In a cereal advert they may spell: Cerealousy- Seriously.
Emoticons
Traditional emojis usually made with letters and symbols (using a keyboard) e.g. :) :( ;) ;( :-)
More casual and informal and linked to slang.
Logograms
Jargon related or special subject related symbols e.g. £ $ % & @ + -
Quality and knowledgeable to seem professional and accurate.
Graphic Contrasts
Italics (emphasis or to quote key points) , Bold (emphasis and to draw attention of reader) , Capitals (shouting). All three together represent overkill and/or confusion.
Spatial Organization
Paragraphs, placement of headlines, major headings, subheadings, bullet points, columns (journalistic convention), pictures, boarders, graphs, images (support/ illustrate text), caption, anchor, layout, pull quotes, white space. All to make text more clear, neat, tidy and in smaller chunks for it to be more manageable to read.
Punctuation
Full stops, truncated sentences, semi-colon, colon, comma, grammar (SE or not SE), brackets, dash(es), quotation, exclamation, question.
Use of colour
Colour can signify a particular emotion or have connotations to a particular feeling, concept or thing. E.g. Red- warning, danger, love, energy, action, determination, communists, blood.
